Welcome to the Shaake team James Bentley, another one of our Northern BMX bandits, there must be something in the water up North, these boys sure do know how to ride…

James looking awesome while losing his hat

So, how did you first get into BMX:
well i used to ride only trails on my mountain bike then it got robbed, so i went up to the local trails and a friend of mine paul chapman who is riding for BSD sorted me out with a full bmx set up told me to start riding a real mans bike haha then from there on i am where i am now….. so cheers paul couldn’t say much more…

How long have you been riding for:
be about 3 years now i should think

How did you hear about the Shaake team and why did you want to get involved:
when i first heard about shaake it was from the kids down at the park saying id should try get on the team, then my close friend marcus got on it and he helped me get involved.

When you’re riding do you prefer park or street? Is there any specific places you love to go back to time and time again:
i love street over park any day of the week, i feel like i get more of a buzz out of doing hand rails than going big on a quarter pipe haha, and i love to always go to the Tec rail in leeds brilliant rail !!

What set up are you currently riding:
i am currently riding a we the people irish frame, Skavenger flat iron forks, the make damed bars cut to like 26″ haha, animal edwin grips, we the people supreme stem, eclat headset, a primo 7 series rim on an eclat simplex hub primo spokes with a duo stunner tire and a Gsport gland hub guard, united cranks, eclat pedals, eclat bottom bracket 19mm, the make sprocket 25t, shadow chain, federal seat and seat post, Gsport ribcage rim on a Gsport ratchet hub 10t primo spokes and a mutiny hub guard and a duo svs tire and then last but not least all 4 pegs.

What tricks are you currently trying to master and what’s your all-time favourite trick to bust:
the trick i’m trying to master id say is tail whips more consistently, and my favourite trick has to be a bar spin along with icepicks.

Have you sustained any serious fails while riding:
well i remember learning bar spins and i broke my 5th metatarsal and my little toe erm that took a week then i was back riding haha and my serious one is my back got a real bad back some days it just goes into spasms and if i pull it bad enough it can put me out of riding for weeks.

What advice would you give anyone looking to get into BMX:
anybody can do it, its how much you want out of it, at the end of the day you get out what you put in…..

And finally, what is your fave Shaake blend to slurp before you go for a pedal:
has to be the mars bar haha

Video to come soon….

Welcome to the team, Tom Nichols, the latest addition to our ever increasing and impressive Northern BMX crew.

So, how did you first get into BMX: I First got into bmx when i got a free wtp off my sisters boyfreind, it was a shed but i adored it then from last November i bought my first decent fit and now i love bmx!

How did you hear about the Shaake team and why did you want to get involved: A friend of mine managed to get on the team and it looked like fun and i wanted a team to ride for so i got in touch and managed to get selected.

When you’re riding do you prefer park or street? Is there any specific places you love to go back to time and time again: It has to be park, i have always ridden park and i just find it fun, and i love riding skelmanthorpe, its a small park but lots of fun.

What set up are you currently riding: stereo loaded frame, bsd highlander bars, bsd highlander forks, unknown front wheel, fly stem, snafu gyro with eclat leaver and odyessy evo 3 brake, bsd street hub on a cinema rim , unknown cranks, odyssey burlington sprocket, cult seat and animal tyres

What tricks are you currently trying to master and what’s your all-time favourite trick to bust: currently trying to get whips landed everytime, no footed cans fully out and tuck nos to taps but in all honesty my all time favorite trick is a simple grizzly haha

Have you sustained any serious fails while riding: not particularly bad, i did fall from the top of a quarter during a tyre tap and thought i had popped some stitches i had in my leg, other than that i have been lucky.

What advice would you give anyone looking to get into BMX: Just do what you like, try it out and start on a terrible bike and build your way up, if you like it carry on no matter if your a bit skechy (like me) or fully smooth.

And finally, what is your fave Shaake blend to slurp before you go for a pedal: defiantly a nutella shake

Keep an eye out for a Northern shaake team edit coming soon..

A few months ago a cool looking individual handed in a demo CD at our Loughborough store and asked if the staff member (Sean) would give it a listen, which he obliged and was suitably impressed enough to add the two tracks to our store playlist. Over the next few weeks more of the team, lots of customers and then eventually Shaake owner James heard these new tunes and all really liked what they heard, and then the question was asked, who is this band?

This talented bunch are named “Park bench society” a young band local to our Loughborough store, we highly recommend you have a listen to their stuff on the links below and read on if you like what you hear.

Murray: far right

Lead Vocals, Guitar, Ukulele, Trumpet, Music, Lyrics.

Favourite Shaake: I was a hot chocolate virgin until recently but its got to be the hot chocolate now, beautiful!

Laurence: far left

Guitar, Backing Vocals, Music, Lyrics.

Favourite Shaake: Oreo

David: centre

Xylophone, Glockenspiel, Drums, Percussion, Music, Lyrics.

Favourite Shaake: Oreo!

Park Bench Society in their own words:

Formed in mid-March 2011, after Murray had partially written the song ‘Go Home’ and wanted David’s advice and help finishing it. It was during writing this that we realised that the sound of a nylon string guitar goes very well with a xylophone, and before long more songs were being written. Soon after, Laurence joined the band after gatecrashing a rehearsal. By the time we had written about 4 songs, and started getting positive feedback from those who listened, we decided on the name Park Bench Society, and began to write more and more. Things really started to kick off in October, with a succesful audition for Glastonbudget (our first ever live performance) and an appearance on Dean Jackson’s ‘The Beat’ radio show, broadcast across BBC Radio Nottingham, Leicester, Derby and Lincoln, check out the groove here:

Since then we have continued to write, and now have around 8 original songs. On December 22nd we will be supporting By The Rivers, a local reggae band who are good friends of ours and have just returned from supporting The Specials on a nationwide arena tour! Check them out if you haven’t already! Can’t wait to appear at Glastonbudget 2012 amongst other festivals! Murray has been invited to attend a masterclass organised by the BBC at Maida Vale and Abbey Road.

Individually, we like a diverse range of acts, from Wild Beasts to Tame Impala, MF Doom to Joy Orbison and Bob Marley to Bloc Party, however our main influences are: Arctic Monkeys, Jamie T, Arcade Fire, Bon Iver, By The Rivers, Vampire Weekend, Bedouin Soundclash, The Kooks and The Coral. We would describe our sound as an original blend of largely acoustic melodic indie, with an affection for ska, but we certainly don’t fall perfectly into any exsisting genres. Lol cat. Lyrically, we currently try to document the trials and triumphs of youth and romance in suburbia, hopefully channeling the wit and wordplay of the likes of Alex Turner and Jamie T, and also the passion of Win Butler and Justin Vernon, to create what we hope are insightful and relatable lyrics, without ever taking ourselves too seriously .

SHOW YOUR SUPPORT AND BUY THE SINGLE, ‘GIRL FROM THE CITY’ WHICH WILL BE RELEASED EARLY NEXT YEAR!

Living in loughborough has meant that we often rock up to shaake. Such a quality shop with a chilled vibe (and of course, an excellent taste in music!)

Henry fray is one of our water sport practitioners (and this isn’t a euphemism for his extra-curricular activities) and an asset to the team, because not only is he a demon on a wake board, he is also somewhat of a creative force behind the lens, Henrys film making is always received well, as are his photos and Henry will be working with the team to produce our hotly anticipated Shaake edit, coming to a screen near you soon..

An original Henry Fray production

Team member Q&A:

So, how did you first get into Wake boarding: I was in Hong Kong with a friend watching the rugby 7′s and one hungover morning we decided to go to deep water bay where an old dude offered us a cheap deal to try it out and we loved it….never looked back after that day!!

How long have you been riding for: Ive been riding for 3 years but have been taking it seriously and genuinely been trying to improve since joining Loughborough Wake a year ago.

How did you hear about the Shaake team and why did you want to get involved: I heard about the shake team through a Cat Clark who was a part of the team. She knew i was into photography and pushed me to get involved!

When you’re riding do you prefer the cable systems or boats: I used to prefer boat just because thats all i knew, until a year ago when i tried my first cable. Now cable is the favourite because i can do much more and i love hitting sliders!

Do you have a favourite location you have ridden: Yes. Box End Park Cable and Sheffield Cable Ski. Box End because there are so many obstacles and it has my nemesis ”the dragon” that i sprung 3 ribs out of my spine bailing on, and i can’t wait to attack it again! Sheffield because everyone there is so friendly and is willing to help you improve by giving pointers.

What set up are you currently riding: I ride a Hyperlite Clash 2011 board with the 2010 Hyperlite Team Bindings

What tricks are you currently trying to master and whats your all time fave trick to bust: Im trying to learn switch roll to reverts of flat water and 5′s off kickers. My favourite trick is the standard back roll because it happens so quickly and to be honest the feeling of landing back on the board without any wobbles is second to nothing!

Have you sustained any serious fails while riding: Well the 3 sprung ribs was quite bad although i didn’t know about it until 2 months later when carrying a massive pan of potatoes at a restaurant where one of them moved and i went to see a chiropractor in a serious amount of pain…..apparently they had sprung and locked so i didn’t know much about it.

We always enjoy your edits, is this creative output important to you: Absolutely. Having the opportunity to put together something that others enjoy gives me a huge amount of pleasure!!

What advice would you give anyone looking to get into this sport: Stick at it….it may seem really hard at the start and you may think you’ll never get anywhere but you always do! plus having a few mates to push you always helps!!

And finally, what is your fave Shaake blend to slurp before you go for a splash: Wake and Shaake Californian Raisin! the Granola is amazing!!

Nathan Jones is one of two amazing Free runners currently on the Shaake team, and we are proud to have him representing the shaake brand, his creative expression and gravity defying athleticism make him a marvel to behold, and his commitment to the sport make him an ideal role model for any new comers to this exciting form of free-sport.

When and How did you first discover your skills for free-running: I discovered Freerunning back in 2005 through watching a few guys on YouTube…. I decided to give it a go and have progressed ever since with sponsors and performances.

We love your double back flip, how long did it take you to get that move locked down: I’ve had my fair share if bails over time with them, but non the less… it’s never stopped me from achieving them! I’ve been smashing them down throughout 2010 – 2011 and continue to progress with different variations of them.

How did you hear about the Shaake team and why did you want to get involved: I heard about shaake through a good friend of mine ‘Elliot Whysall’ i wanted to get involved with this because I thought that a shaake sponsorship would be a fun experience… and through this, I’ve met and made some great friends.

How do you put together your creative lines for your videos: It tends to come naturally to me, picking out new and creative lines for me to move around.

Do you feel the gymnastic aspect to Free running is important: Indeed it is very important but you must always remember that you’re your greatest teacher…. Its important that you find your own style.

What tricks are you currently trying to master and what is your all time fave trick to bust: I’m currently in the process of creating new moves but apart from that… I’m just perfecting what i can already do. My favourite move to do would be Websters… My 2nd would be Double gainers.

Have you sustained any serious fails: I’ve had some seriously funny / life threatening fails over my time of training, but have never broken anything.

What advice would you give anyone looking to get into this sport: never do something that you know you’re not capable of doing… stay safe!

And finally, what is your fave Shaake blend to slurp before you go running: I can never decide which shaake is my favourite on the menu… I often create and enjoy my own next gen un-existing drinks, not on the menu x

Aaron James is one of our first and most valued members of the Shaake team, and a true ambassador for his chosen discipline. Scooter riders often get a bad rap, but Aaron is proof that when ridden properly scooters deserve a place shredding at the park with the best of them!

how did you first get into Scootering: I first got into scootering after i gave up mtb, because of a crash which shook me quite a bit. i had no bike or anything at the time, realised i had a old scooter from when i was a little kid in the shed,(at this point i didn’t realise freestyle scootering even existed, id never seen anyone on a scooter attempting stunts in Loughborough) so i just started messing around on the road outside my house, and ended up learning to 360 on flat, and from that point on iv not stopped progressing.

What made you choose a scooter over a BMX or board: The accident i had was the reason i didn’t go into bmx, also everyone rode a skateboard, felt like doing something different.

How long have you been riding for: Just over a year

How did you hear about the Shaake team and why did you want to get involved: I first got involved through the ambassedor side of things. James recognized that i did something different, i guess he was sceptical at first, as most people are about scootering, but i think he saw that it wasn’t just me rolling round on a kids toy

When you’re riding, do you prefer park or street? and are there any specific places you love to go back to time and time again: This would have to be “Lit Up” in Loughborough university, its a street spot, small banks, a 4 set and a 6 set with ledges everywhere, in a way it was like what made me the way i scooter now.

What tricks are you currently trying to master and whats your all time fave trick to bust: Trying to get flairs down at the moment, think a couple more trips to corby are needed

Have you sustained any serious fails while riding: yep, Broken thumb, fractured index finger, and a problem with my knee joint which iv not been to the doctors for yet, oh and i took an inward briflip to the head once, that really hurt.

And finally, what is your fave Shaake blend to slurp before you go for a rolll: Mellow Mango all the way !!!!

Jacob Benfield

Jacob Benfield is currently the only blader on the Shaake flow team and he is representing his fellow bladers well, with a bag full of tricks on lock down and an eagerness to progress every time he straps those wheels to his feet, Jacob is a valued member of the Shaake team …

So, how did you first get into Blading: My mate johns a skateboarder and said that i should start an extreme sport, and i thought that the coolest looking one out of them was blading. So i picked blading.

How long have you been skating for: im not that sure really , with breaks inbetween were i thought i wanted too quit id say 2 and a half years.

How did you hear about the Shaake team and why did you want to get involved: Went down to skate the Loughborough skatepark and we started talking to the teams scooter dude Aaron and he said it was cool. I thought it sounded cool myself so i went and sent in a short vid and here i am.

When you’re Skating do you prefer park or street? Is there any specific places you love to go back to time and time again: definately park. with street you dont get the smoothness of a park, and i feel with a park its a lot easier to learn new tricks and find your own unique style. And i love the boardroom skatepark, i go every week.

What set up are you currently rolling with: the xsjado Damien Wilsons 2 – 2010

What tricks are you currently trying to master and what’s your all time fave trick to bust: Im currently trying to master, 360 grab over a jump box. And my all time favourite trick has to be a negative makio grind.

Have you sustained any serious fails while skating: not really , the only one i can really think of i when i fell of an 8 ft box at the boardroom straight to the floor onto my side. Couldnt wawlk properly for about a week and it left an engravement in my leg of the mp3 player i was listening to.

And finally, what is your fave Shaake blend to slurp before you go for a roll: It has to be a parma violets shaake. A perfect drink before a good sesh
